rPET Content Standards Reshape Global Food Packaging Supply Chains

10 Sep, 2026
Recycled PET, commonly known as rPET, is rapidly transforming the food packaging industry. The European Union's Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation requires that new plastic food and beverage containers contain increasing shares of recycled material, with mandatory recycled content targets taking effect from 2030.

Similar regulations are under discussion in other major markets, prompting global brands to redesign their packaging supply chains.

Using rPET in food contact applications requires strict quality control. Contaminants must be removed through advanced washing and decontamination processes, and food-grade rPET must meet migration standards set by authorities such as the US FDA and the European Food Safety Authority. Super-clean recycling technologies have improved significantly, allowing rPET to achieve performance comparable to virgin PET in transparency, strength and processability.

For thermoforming manufacturers, the shift to rPET brings both opportunities and challenges. Blended structures combining virgin and recycled layers are becoming a standard solution, balancing food safety and sustainability. Mold and process parameters must be carefully adjusted because recycled materials show different flow behavior and color stability during forming, requiring additional experience and testing. Early adopters are already building dedicated rPET production lines and forming long-term supply agreements with licensed recycling partners.
